How to plan around swimming qualifying times
Qualifying times can shape a season for the better or scatter it into a chase across too many events. A simple plan keeps the targets useful and the swimmer enjoying their racing.
Direct answer
Plan around qualifying times by choosing a small number of focus events where the gap is realistic, finding meets in the right course and window to attempt them, and tracking progress without trying to qualify in everything at once. Always confirm targets against official information.
Choose focus events
Look across the swimmer's events and pick two or three where the gap to a target is realistic this season. Trying to chase every event at once usually dilutes the training and the racing.
Let the swimmer's strengths lead. The events where they are naturally closer, and that they enjoy, are usually the best places to build toward a target.
Line up the right meets
Match the attempt to the course the target needs. If a target is long course, plan to race it at a long course meet inside the accepted window.
Give the swimmer more than one chance at a target event across the season. A single attempt leaves no room for an off day, while two or three spreads the pressure.
Mind the window and the calendar
Many targets only accept swims from a defined window. Note the window for each target meet so a strong swim is not wasted because it was recorded too early or too late.
Balance target meets with lower-pressure racing. Development races, relays and fun events keep a swimmer fresh and often produce the relaxed swim that finally closes a gap.
Track the plan in one place
Keep the focus events, their targets and the gap to each in one view, so the plan stays visible and calm rather than scattered across messages and screenshots.
PB Pathway can hold your PBs by event and course and show selected qualifying-time context where source data exists, as planning context. It does not guarantee qualification or entry, and coverage varies by county, region, season and course, so always check official meet information.
FAQ
How many events should I target at once?
Usually two or three focus events where the gap is realistic. Chasing every event at once tends to dilute both training and racing.
How do I pick which meets to enter?
Match the meet to the course and window each target needs, and give the swimmer more than one chance at a target event across the season.
Why does the qualifying window matter to a plan?
Many targets only accept swims from a defined period. Racing outside the window can waste a strong swim, so plan attempts inside it.
Should every meet be a target meet?
No. Mixing in lower-pressure racing keeps a swimmer fresh and often produces the relaxed swim that closes a gap.
Can PB Pathway plan my season for me?
It shows your gaps and selected qualifying-time context as planning context where data exists. The plan and entries are yours to confirm against official information.
